Our 10-year-old All In One Printer at the office had decided to stop working and was out of its warranty (actually by 6 years), so my boss asked me to find a replacement. Just up my street I thought as I love doing research and I know a thing or two about printers.
My budget was around the $200 mark and after extensive searching I finally came across the Canon Pixma MX870 Wireless Office All-in-One Printer.
15 of us work in the office and I needed to find out if the Canon Pixma MX870 was up to the job. So here are the most important things to look for in the printer.
How many dots per inch?
One of the most important features of a printer is of course the quality of the final print. The higher the resolution measured in dpi (dots per inch, which are the number of dots that make up an image) the clearer the print will be. This is especially helpful when printing photos or high quality flyers.
If you want to print photos then I would always recommend using a good photo paper, and set the printer to its highest level to get the sharpest most vibrant pictures. But remember this will slow the printing process down.
The Canon MX870 prints out at 9600 x 2400 maximum color dpi with tiny 1pl ink droplets producing sharp printouts, and brilliant life-like images. This is especially good for photographs, business documents or leaflets.
How good are the print outs from this Canon printer compared to other printers?
To give you an idea, inexpensive inkjet printers tend to print out at around 1200 x 1200 dpi.
More expensive printers normally print anywhere from 4,800 x 1200 dpi, which means that the Canon MX870 produces superior prints.
Note: The downside to high-resolution images or documents is that they use more ink. If the document is not important it’s best to print in draft mode, or a lower resolution saving considerable ink and money.
The Canon Pixma MX870 uses 5 individual ink cartridges, so you only need to change the cartridge that runs out, which will lower your printing costs dramatically.
One thing that caught my eye is that each cartridge has an LED in the print head that lights up when you install it. If any of the cartridges are not installed correctly, then the LED does not light up, simple but effective.
Print Speed
Time is money and for most users print speed is essential, as the faster a page is printed the quicker you can get on with the job in hand. But beware as manufacturers always quote the fastest speeds possible, which are not always accurate or truthful.
Black and white documents typically print faster than color ones. Canon claims that the Pixma MX870 can print a 10x15cm (9600 x 2400 dpi) colour photo in about 39 seconds. For black and white printing they quote a speed of 6.1ppm (pages per minute).
Is this fast for a printer?
No it’s not as fast as some printers, but the prints are excellent giving quality over speed, unlike other printers on the market.
After much searching online I found that the quoted print speeds from Canon are quite accurate.
Scanner Resolution
Copying documents and photographs requires a good scanner. The higher the DPI (dots per inch) and the higher the scanner bit depth, the crisper and sharper the scanned images will appear. The minimum resolution you should look for is 600 x 1200 dpi.
The MX870 can handle a variety of media up to 8.5 x 11.7 inches, and produces 2400×4800 dpi scans, which means the printed pages are crisp and very clear. I have read that the scanner is also very quiet, fast and efficient.
Canon printers use Dual Color Gamut Processing Technology which means when you copy a photograph or document, the printer will reproduce the colors of the original documents time after time, with no fade, keeping the colors in tacked. There are several options when it comes to scanning with this All In One Printer, for instance scanning to PC, PDF, Email and OCR, which stands for Optical Character Recognition and is the process of converting printed materials into text or word processing files, which can be easily edited and stored.
Super G3 Fax
The last thing you want to do is to tie up your phone line for too long. Fast fax speeds save money and reduce the time needed to send a fax. The Canon uses Super G3 so this means that it can send faxes at a higher speed than the normal G3 or earlier fax systems. You can store up to 100 coded speed dials with the Pixma MX870 saving you much needed time rather than having to dial each and every number, you can also store up to 250 incoming pages.
Easy as 1,2,3
Canon include a piece of software called Easy Photoprint. This program is essentially a basic but very handy piece of photo editing software. Just install the software on your computer and you have plenty of options to choose which enable you to edit and manipulate your photographs, and then print out the final images.
The software has a nice intuitive easy to use interface that anyone can use.
1. Firstly select an image from your computer, including external devices, (as many as you want),
2. Pick your paper type and size,
3. Finally choose the layout and print.
With Easy Photoprint you can also crop your image, correct red-eye, smooth facial lines and skin, and even brighten and sharpen faces.
Built in Wireless Fidelity.
Going back only a few years ago the only option you had was to connect the printer to your computer via cable.
Nowadays you can connect Canon Printers without messy cables as long as you have a wireless router, this is great because you can print or scan from different rooms in your office or home.
What puts many people off using wireless is the hassle of setting up the connection. After reading many customer reviews setting up the printer for wireless connection is really easy to do.
Great news because now you can print your photos wirelessly from a compatible iPhone 3G, 3GS and iPod touch device with the new Easy-PhotoPrint for iPhone App, available for free on the app store.
Also if you have a Bluetooth enabled camera phone then you can print to the printer without any cables, but you need to buy the additional BU-30 wireless Bluetooth unit for the printer which is around $45.
Ease of use
This printer uses a fully integrated 35 page auto document feeder, which allows multiple pages to be copied, faxed or scanned at one time without the need to place each individual page in the copier or scanner, saving you considerable time each month.
Auto duplex printing is a very handy option to have and not all printers include it, but guess what? The Canon printer does. This feature lets you print 2 sided documents without having to manually flip the pages. This can reduce your paper consumption by 50%, and means you don’t have to physically stand at the printer and turn every page over.
You can load paper from the front cassette which takes 150 sheets, and/or the rear tray (which also takes 150 sheets), which is great if you have large documents to print that use different types of paper.
No Computer, No problem
If you need to quickly print off some images and don’t want to use your computer, then you can do it from the printer. All you need to do is either insert a memory card in to the printer from your camera (CompactFlash, SD, MemoryStick and xD cards ), or connect your camera directly to the printer.
Using the bright 2.5 inch lcd screen together with the easy scroll wheel both located on the front of the printer, simply select the images you need and print.

I think that this printer would be ideal in a small business, small workgroup or a home office, but not really a work horse for large businesses. I have recommended this printer to my boss as a great All In One Solution for our office.
